Oasis Las Vegas RV Resort

Oasis Las Vegas RV Resort

Our very first RV park for the maiden voyage of our Airstream was at the Oasis Las Vegas RV Resort. We looked for a stop that would be midway between our home and ultimate destination of Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah.  Las Vegas seemed to be the right midpoint.

My perusal of campground reviews in and around Las Vegas identified the Oasis Las Vegas RV Resort as a top choice.  Among our criteria as newbie travel trailer travelers was a pull thru site.

PULLING INTO THE PARK

Be mindful of the archway that you will pass through as you enter this location. We spotted several areas on each wall where it was clear rigs had dinged their sides during pull in attempts.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

If initial impressions mean anything, this did not start on a great note. Maybe it’s because our arrival was in the midst of the Covid era. But geez, the greeting felt so rude.  A gruff comment was the first thing we heard, “You can’t come in without a mask”. Umm what? There are other places in town where masks are either optional or not being required. Their direction was adamant and insensitive. How about, “Maybe you didn’t know, but we are asking our guests to wear masks for health safety of our guests.” There is a better way to deliver the request. Julie got the same treatment in the resort store.  Mind you, we’re not opposed to wearing masks, but there are more polite ways to communicate the requirement.

Our sense of the reception as guests was a bit of an attitude by the staff, some arrogance, and not the greatest of customer service feels.

PARKING THE TRAILER

From there, things got somewhat better.  We wanted a pull thru site, and after registration, we drove into a site just beyond the office area.  It was long enough for our 27 foot trailer and truck combined.  As we were just here to sleep for the night, we didn’t bother to unhitch. In five minutes, our electric and water were hooked up, and we were set.

GET READY FOR THE SUN

This is Las Vegas.  In the summertime, this means you will be in the heat.  The sites here are on concrete slabs.  There are limited trees, and hardly any that provide usable shade.  We had no shade of sorts at our site.  The electric connection came in as necessary to run our AC pretty much full time when we stayed here.

DINING OPTIONS ARE LIMITED IF YOU WANT TO WALK ELSEWHERE

This would be one of the few nights during which we would not prepare our meal in the trailer.  On the map, we spied a Cracker Barrel right across the street.  You would think getting across a street should be a simple thing.  Well, not so when the street involves crossing the highway.

What we thought would be a fairly quick walk, turned out to be a 30 minute hike each way. While we could see the Cracker Barrel on the other side of the highway, it turns out there is not a quick walking path to get there. Part of the walk included a detour by the freeway, away from the main road. A sketchy dude was across the street. An unattended shopping cart bike on our path, left us a bit leery as the path turned into this walking alley. We couldn’t tell what was around the corner in this lightly pedestrian trafficked area. In short, the walk to Cracker Barrel was long, and didn’t feel safe. We debated about an Uber to get back, but the estimated 5 minute trip by car would cost 12 bucks. Maybe not a high price to pay for safety and convenience, but we opted to walk back.

On the return journey, homeless people starting to be visible along the edges of our walk. That same leery detour now had more sketchy folks just barely visible. We turned, and created our own detour on the side of the busy street. When we were able to see the start of the highway walking detour, cops had shown up and were in discussions with some of the folks who were making us nervous.

Our tip: If staying at the Oasis RV Resort, take a car to Cracker Barrel if you make the choice to dine there. Or given that it’s a Cracker Barrell, you could just as easily drive your entire rig over to the parking lot.  As we had one night at Oasis in a pull through site, we opted for convenience – which means no unhitching of our truck from the trailer this day, hence the walking decision.  Other options would be eat at your rig, or use the on premises restaurant at the Oasis Las Vegas RV Resort.

SECOND CHANCE

We had booked one more night at the Oasis Las Vegas RV Resort for our return trip home.

We pulled into the Oasis RV parking lot shortly before the official check in time of 1pm. It is now hot. 97 degrees with a few more degrees still expected before the heat peaks. At our second stay at Oasis in just over a week, we are now prepared to engage the check in process with our requisite facial masks. While the gentleman at the security gate was cordial enough, the place still gave us the vibe of a highly regulated, strict rules campground.   We walked in the lobby to register with masks on our faces.  We still walked away with a bit of a cold feel here.  We do wonder how the vibe might be different in a non Covid-19 environment.  Maybe we’ll get a chance to learn that on a future drive through Las Vegas.

Our second stay also kept our truck hitched to the trailer.  Our only hookup was connecting the electric cord to the RV. So with a complete setup time of about one minute, we opened the door to enter the trailer, blasting the AC, closing the screen to the bedroom of the trailer to keep as much cool air as possible in the front where we kill some time in the afternoon.

AMENITIES

We explored a bit of the grounds, checking out the shop on premises, walking by the pool area, which is allowing swimmers.  There are showers in a few buildings located on the campground.  We took advantage of these before dinner.  The showers here were the most spacious and seemingly clean of each place we have stayed during our Utah National Parks trip.

Resort amenities include:

  • Restaurant
  • Convenience store and gift shop
  • Adult pool and hot tub
  • Family pool
  • Exercise facility
  • 18-hole natural greens putting course
  • Horseshoe pits and Bocci ball court
  • Propane availability
  • Availability for on-site RV repairs
  • Cable TV – close to 50 channels available

LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION

If you like the things Las Vegas has to offer, this is a fairly good option if traveling to the city in an RV.

In addition to the strip and downtown, there are various places that offer ways to spend your days during your stay. You can take advantage of the following attractions:

  • Red Rock Canyon
  • Hoover Dam
  • Lake Mead
  • Death Valley National Park

OASIS LAS VEGAS RV RESORT LIKES

  • Pull thru sites are plenty
  • Full hooksups available including cable TV option
  • Price for a full hook up site is reasonable
  • Amenities – bathrooms, showers, store and cafe, which allowed for a non truck trailer disconnect and electricity only connection
  • Showers – clean and spacious

OASIS LAS VEGAS RV RESORT DISLIKES

  • Attitude – customer service could be much more polite and cordial
  • Limited shade (well make that none)
  • Hot (not Oasis’ fault – it is what it is here in Vegas)
  • Ability to walk to anything notable is a problem, even the Cracker Barrel
  • Shuttle option would be a great addition
