Escape to Mossy Cave: A Perfect Day Trip from Bryce Canyon National Park

Where is Mossy Cave?
Mossy Cave is located in Southern Utah, just outside Bryce Canyon National Park. It can be accessed by a short drive or hike from the park’s main entrance. This hidden gem is less well-known than other attractions, making it a peaceful and secluded spot to explore.
How We Found Mossy Cave
We drove past the entrance to Mossy Cave a few times during our stay at the nearby Bryce Valley KOA Campground.
As the parking area appeared to be busy each time we drove by, this telegraphed an indication that this was a popular spot. During our first day in the area, we hiked the Fairyland Loop Trail at Bryce Canyon National Park. We chose to stop at Mossy Cave during the early morning of our second day in the area.
What You’ll Find at Mossy Cave
When you arrive at Mossy Cave, you’ll find a small parking lot and a short hiking trail that leads to the cave. Walking along the trail, you’ll be surrounded by stunning red rock formations and towering cliffs. The trail is well-maintained and easy to navigate, making it suitable for all ages and skill levels.
Once you reach the cave, you’ll be greeted by a beautiful waterfall cascading down the moss-covered walls. The cool mist from the waterfall and the peaceful sound of water flowing create a serene atmosphere perfect for taking in the beauty of nature.
Mossy Cave Trailhead
To find the Mossy Cave Trailhead, drive to the main entrance of Bryce Canyon National Park. From there, take Highway 12 east for about 4 miles until you reach Tropic Reservoir Road. Turn left onto this road and continue for about 2 miles until you see a small parking lot on your left. This is the Mossy Cave Trailhead, where you can park and begin your hike to the cave.
Alternatively, you can also access the trailhead from the town of Tropic by taking Center Street to Mossy Cave Road, which leads directly to the parking lot.
It’s a short and easy drive from Bryce Canyon National Park and Tropic to reach this picturesque destination.
During our visit, we walked over to the Mossy Cave Trailhead and took some time to read about the area with the markers placed by the park service.
The walking path is adjacent to a running stream, offering some beachy-type areas where one can sit and admire the scenery.
Looking up, there are fantastic geological formations.
Mossy Cave Trail Difficulty
The Mossy Cave trail is considered easy, with a round-trip distance of approximately 1 mile and minimal elevation gain. The path is mostly flat and well-maintained, making it suitable for all ages and fitness levels. However, there are some rocky areas and uneven terrain, so proper footwear is recommended. Also, the trail can get muddy after rainfall, so please check the weather before your visit and come prepared with appropriate gear.
We found the trail to be pretty easy. The hike allows viewing some hoodoos up close and without hiking long or steep trails.
Exploring Mossy Cave
Mossy Cave is a natural wonder unique to the Southern Utah landscape. However, it’s not really a cave.
It is a short jaunt to the mossy cave, which isn’t as much of a cave as it is a grotto. It is partitioned off with a barrier so that you can get reasonably close but can’t enter. This is a good thing to protect the natural moss that grows in the grotto.
The grotto forms as an underground spring permeates the bedrock, and water slowly dissolves the calcite that bonds the silts and muds of the Claron Formation. During the short spring and summer seasons, a cool, moist environment becomes perfect for mosses to grow in this otherwise arid landscape. By late fall, icicles begin to form as water continues to seep through the rock. Sheltered from the sun, even as the days are growing warmer and longer, these icicles sometimes last until June!
The vibrant red rock formations, lush green moss, and flowing water create a breathtaking scene. It’s easy to see why this location has become a popular spot for hikers and nature lovers alike. As you explore the cave and its surroundings, you’ll be in awe of the beauty and tranquility that Mossy Cave has to offer.
What Can You Do at Mossy Cave?
At Mossy Cave, there are various activities you can do to experience this natural wonder more fully.
You can start by taking a short hike along the well-marked trail to see the cave and its waterfall up close. Along the way, be sure to stop and take in the breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
You can also bring a picnic lunch and enjoy it at one of the designated picnic areas near the parking lot.
Bring a blanket or chair to relax near the stream.
For those feeling more adventurous, you can explore further by taking some of the side trails that lead to other beautiful viewpoints and hidden gems in the area.
Mossy Cave Waterfall
Be sure to visit the nearby waterfall. We retraced our steps from the Mossy Cave and then veered left at the trail fork to get closer to the nearby waterfall. We were able to get pretty close to the Mossy Cave Waterfall and took the opportunity to get some photos.
Why is it Called Mossy Cave?
Mossy Cave was given its name due to the stunning moss-covered walls inside the cave. The constant flow of water from the waterfall creates a moist environment, allowing for the growth of vibrant green moss on the cave’s walls. This unique feature adds to the enchanting atmosphere of Mossy Cave and is a sight to behold for visitors.
What Else is Near Mossy Cave?
Aside from Mossy Cave, there are several other attractions in the surrounding area that are worth checking out.
One of the closest is Tropic Reservoir, a small lake perfect for fishing and boating.
Numerous hiking trails are nearby, such as the Rim Trail and Fairyland Loop in Bryce Canyon National Park.
For those interested in history and culture, a visit to the nearby town of Tropic is a must, with its charming restaurants and shops.
And for those seeking more outdoor adventures, Red Canyon State Park is just a short drive from Mossy Cave.
Photography Opportunities at Mossy Cave
One of the best photo spots near Mossy Cave is along the trail leading to the cave. The contrast between the vibrant red rocks and lush green moss creates a stunning photo backdrop.
Additionally, capturing the view of the waterfall from inside the cave is a must-do for any photographer.
Another great spot for photos is at a designated picnic area near the parking lot, where you can capture the serene surroundings and nature’s beauty.
The hoodoos make for excellent photography subjects.
And when you leave the cave, consider driving into the charming town of Tropic for more photography opportunities.

Despite its name, it’s not actually a cave at all. It’s a natural alcove carved out of the mountainside by water erosion. And while it may not be a traditional cave, it still offers a fascinating experience worth visiting.
The Mossy Cave hike is approximately 1-mile round trip with minimal elevation gain. However, the length can vary depending on how many side trails you take and how much time you spend exploring the area. It’s a relatively easy hike that can be completed in less than an hour, making it perfect for a quick stop or as part of a more extended day of hiking in the area.
Pets are not allowed on the trail at Mossy Cave.  They are also not permitted on unpaved viewpoints. Â

Plan Your Visit to Mossy Cave
Mossy Cave is an excellent addition for tourists visiting Southern Utah or Bryce Canyon National Park. The best time to visit is during the spring and summer months when the waterfall is at its fullest, and the weather is ideal.
